Gardens from the 2013 Gardens in the Wild Festival.
Some very special
private gardens will open exclusively for the Festival on Saturday
and Sunday afternoons from 2pm. Please view details below and check
locations on the map. For those who wish to cycle, we have put
together two routes, also marked on the map. You pay at the gardens
- there is no need to book.
Rhodds Farm

A two acre garden within 60 acres of pasture and
woodland. Formal garden in front of
dovecote, double herbaceous borders, informal mixed planting around
a wildlife pond,
wild flower meadow and woodland walk.
Directions: From Titley take the
B4355 to Kington. At the first roundabout turn left in the
direction of Leominster and Hereford, and keep left at the second
roundabout staying on the
A44 in the direction of Leominster. After about a mile turn right a
few hundred yards after Penhros Court down a small lane. Continue
down here for almost a mile to a small crossroads. Go straight
ahead down the drive marked to Rhodds Farm.

Directions: From Titley take the B4355 in the direction of Presteigne. After about half a mile take a right hand turn on a sharp bend sign posted to Shobdon and Staunton on Arrow. After a couple of miles turn sharp right at the stall of Stansbatch nursery down a small lane. Go on for a couple of hundred yards and you will find the drive for Upper Tan house on the left.

This young 5 acre garden is developing and
maturing. Sit in
one of the ‘rooms’ around the house incorporating pleached limes, a
canal, a
parterre, topiary, double borders and numerous roses. Discover the
rosewalk
and productive kitchen garden. Wander off towards the wonderful
views of
the countryside and the informality of the orchards, birch grove,
nuttery and
woodland with its pond.

The very wild-style naturalistic garden at
Montpelier Cottage has been made by
garden writer Noel Kingsbury, and his wife Jo Eliot, since moving
here in 2007. It aims to create a seamless link between the garden
and the surrounding landscape, with plantings dominated by
perennials and grasses. Inspirations include German parks planting,
and semi-natural environments like American prairie and other
European wildflower meadows. The one acre garden merges into three
acres of former pasture land, some of which has a very rich and
interesting wetland wildflower flora. There are also trial beds and
research plots, which focus on long-term issues of plant
competition and management.

B4355 to Kington. At the first roundabout turn left in the
direction of Leominster and Hereford, and go straight ahead at the
second roundabout on the A4111 to Hereford. After 5 miles you will
go through Eardisley, and half a mile further on turn right on A438
in the direction of Brecon .You will pass through Winforton and
then you will pass the toll bridge over the Wye at Clifford on your
left. Soon after this take a right on a very tight turning uphill
signed to Brilley. Follow the road for about a mile and the house
is signposted down a lane on the right.

Keep on the main road ,which becomes the A438 after Eardisley, in the direction of Hereford. About a 5 miles from Eardisley you will see a large house in parkland on a hill on the left. Turn right at the sign for Byford and follow the road through the village. The Forge is down a track to the right at the far end.

Continue on for a couple miles, turning left at a crossroad in teh direction of Shoddon. You will find Court of Noke after about two miles on the left.

This four acre garden was begun about 10 years
ago in an overgrown orchard.
Emphasis on simplicity: bulbs in grass, roses,
clematis and honeysuckles clambering
through trees, bog garden in old leat. Woodland garden under stand
of wild
cherries, and a new walk down to the river.
Directions: Head out of Titley towards Kington. Take the
first left at junction signed Lyonshall, Whittern. Go down hill and
bear right, through conifer copse and over River Arrow. Titley Mill
is 50 yds beyond on left hand side. Parking in field opposite
Mill.

Hergest Croft Gardens lie in the heart of the
Welsh Marches with stunning views
towards the Black Mountains. There are gorgeous
flower borders, an old fashioned
kitchen garden, azaleas, a maple grove and park
woodland. Gift shop and tearooms.
Directions: From Titley take the B4355 to Kington. At the
first roundabout turn right
onto the A44 in the direction of Rhyader. Turn
left after half a mile at Floodgates,
in the direction of Kington town centre.
Follow the road uphill for about 200 yards
and turn right at the sign for Hergest Croft.
Follow the road to the car park
opposite the gardens.

The 3 ½ acre garden is laid out round a tangle of
streams and ponds behind the old corn mill with wonderful views to
the surrounding meadows and hills. It is bursting with the
colours
and textures of exuberant planting and has a surprise around every
corner. There is a huge collection of unusual plants to interest
the serious plants person while the fantastic follies
will delight everyone – and may play a few gentle tricks on
you.
Directions: From Titley take the B4355 to Kington. At the
first roundabout turn left in the direction of Leominster and
Hereford, and keep left at the second roundabout staying on the A44
in the direction of Pembridge and Leominster. After about 4
miles you will see Westonbury Mill sign posted on the right. Take
this turn and continue down the drive to the
garden.

Three acres of intimate garden rooms that have
been growing since 1913. Furnished
with follies and fragrant flowers, towers and topiary,
pools and a potager, and paths
to five acres of specimen trees on the banks
of a
river, on the border with Wales.
Directions: Go to the centre of Presteigne and pass the
church on your left.
The road passes over a bridge and out of the town. Just a
quarter-mile from the
bridge, take a right turn and follow the road for about 1 miles,
past B&B
on the right. Bryan’s Ground is a little further on, on the
right.

Tucked away on the south facing slopes of The
Radnor Valley
this richly planted garden is a
subtle tapestry of colour throughout the season.
In the main garden a yew walk leads into a
box-edged parterre planted with bulbs, perennials and some unusual
annuals. Beyond, roses and rare clematis scramble. A small garden
is scented by a hedge of Hidcote lavender, and a
gate cuts through a beech hedge leading to the
meadow beyond where even finer views of the surrounding hills can
be seen from the balustraded toposcope.
Directions: From Titley take the B4355 to Kington. At the
first roundabout turn right
onto the A44 in the direction of Rhyader. Continue on for about 4
miles and turn
right at Walton onto the B4372 in the direction of Presteigne.
Follow the brown
signs to the nursery, a couple of miles further on to the east of
Kinnerton.
